the embarcadero in san francisco. >> reporter: if you like splashing around in water, head to those low lying spots today you won't be disappointed especially if yesterday is any indication. these are from marin city where there was flooding they saw flooding on bike trails, parking lots up to the doorsteps of some businesses. today is expected to be the peak. king tides happen when the sun and moon align to the gravitational pull brings more water on to the shore. people knew it was happening but still surprised by the amount of water. >> there was flooding, i had no idea it was that bad. >> how long have you been riding here? >> i right everyday or try. in san francisco's castro district started last night. the fire broke out about 7:00 p.m. on 26th street near castro. most of the damage was done to the attic but a home next door also sustained some damage during the fire fight. no one was hurt. >>> authorities are stepping up their efforts to keep drunk drivers off the road and they will keep up the added pressure through new year's eve. tonight there are check points in san francisco, pacifica, redwood city, mountain view and san jose. abc7 news reporter alan wong reports from san rafael. >> around the bay area law enforcement agencies are conducting driver's license checks and, if needed, a sobriety test. >> do what you have to do but don't drink and drive. >> apparently an extra reminder is needed. during the week before christmas the chp made 1,171 dui arrests statewide compared to 980 in 2011. fatalities were up more than double during this period. 39 compared to 14 last year. >> you know, i think people are a little more depressed this year. i think they are going out trying to find a relief for whatever pressures they have. >> i

now christmas day tradition underway in san francisco. volunteers are hard at work to make sure the less fortunate have a warm meal today. kira klapper joins us live from glide memorial church. good morning, merry christmas. >> reporter: good morning, merry christmas to you eric. the annual glide christmas meal is less than an hour away. it will be served 7 a.m., 5,000 meals will be served. volunteers are already here to prepare, listen to this savory mouth-watering selection, ham and eggs, biscuits, oranges, grits and coffee. at 9:00, turkey, ham, sweet potatoes and mixed vegetables. 5,000 meals, 650 volunteers will be here throughout the day. we spoke to one volunteer, one man who used to be on the receiving end of the generosity of glide. >> i was a street person a long time ago and i want to give back. >> reporter: what does your morning consist of here? >> i am here most seven days a week, different duties, clean-up. also prepping when necessary. on special days like this, it is different. you get ready to help others and do things, kind of keep things going. >> reporter: g

and they are looking for three suspects. >>> in san francisco officers say five men, at least one of them armed, terrorized people in a home invasion. it happened on 31 avenue between geary boulevard and lament -- clement street. a neighbor said he heard screams coming from the house. by the time officers arrived the men were gone and they got away with a number of items from the house. >> an armed man police say took two women hostage during an attempted robbery is recovering this morning after being shot by officers. cameras caught the smoke of a concussion grenade fired by police into a jack in the box yesterday. a hostage was rushed to safety by police. the gunman's condition is not known. the incident began at 12:30 when police received a call after robbery in progress. a four hour standoff resulted. the other hostage was also safely released. >>> in concord a grocery store will be open today after being forced to close last night because of a strong chemical smell. it happened at the food max on monument boulevard. the fire department got a call around 4:30 yesterday afternoon about peopl
